Disable Linkable Email Addresses

How To Disable Linkable Email Addresses

Not a common question this one but it came up a while ago and I thought it worth including here. It’s a very easy fix too once you know where to look.

Let’s just make sure we know what we’re talking about…

When you add an email address anywhere in a text container in Joomla. Provided it conforms to the standard email address format i.e. This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. Joomla, by default, will make it linkable such that it will open the default email application such as Outlook and add the email address to the recipient field.

This can be undesirable for various reasons. One I can think of is the linkable text colour may not fit with you background or template theme.

There are some CSS tricks to change the linkable text colour but we don’t have the space to go into that here. Instead let us find out how we disable linakable email addresses:

  1. First login as administrator to the backend of your Joomla website
  2. Next click Extensions > Plug-in Manager
  3. Locate the plug-in named Content – Email Cloaking
  4. In the right-hand pane change the mode from linkable to non-linkable text

Your done!
